Cursed Films and Strange Deaths Behind the Big Screen

The history of cinema is very rich and has a lot of scandalous backstories. In addition to the intriguing parts that are well hidden by the cameras, some macabre events put even the most sceptical to ponder. A lot of the blockbuster films are considered cursed, as they are surrounded by bizarre incidents and strange deaths.

Poltergeist & Τhe Εxorcist

Steven Spielberg and Tobe Hooper are the creators of the famous trilogy: Poltergeist (1982), Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986), and Poltergeist III (1988). Each of the movies is associated with a strange death. One year after the first film, actress Dominique Dunn was murdered, while actor Julian Beck dies in 1985 on the set of the second film! Heather O’Rourke, the 12-year-old actress also dies of septic shock within less than a year after the release of the third movie! it is noteworthy that actress JoBeth Williams once stated during an interview, that the skeletons used for the shooting of the swimming pool scene in the first film were real! The Exorcist (1973) is also considered to be a cursed movie. Some people believe that it is the most creepy and scary horror film of all time! Many people who were associated with the specific films died within 15 months of its release, such as Jack McGowan (from a heart attack) and the Greek actress Vasiliki Maliaros who died on the 9th of February 1973. The deaths of a night guard, a cleaner, and a cameraman’s daughter also occurred after the release of the film. Linda Blair, the young actress who portrayed the little girl who was occupied by the evil forces, once stated that the specific role made her move away from the idea of having children. It is rumored that she predicted the death of one of her associates a few weeks before his death! It is also reported that the shooting areas caught fire during one night when no one was there. Finally, when the film was first released in movie theaters, many heart attacks were recorded worldwide. John Frankenheimer, the director of Exorcist: The Beginning was killed due to a clap of thunder that hit a 400-year-old cross in Metropolitan Theater in Rome which killed him even before filming began.

The 666 sign

In 1976, The Omen was released. Gregory Peck’s son committed suicide 2 months before the movie was released in movie theaters! Peck and director David Seltzer boarded on 2 separate planes as they had to travel to Great Britain for shooting a few scenes. During that same day the planes were struck by a thunder over the Atlantic ocean! It is also reported that the hotel of the Richard Donner was bombarded by the Irish army forces. Many of his associated also found tragic death when their plane crushed during some aerial shootings! The most curious incident occurred to John Richardson, the person in charge of the special effects of the film. It was Friday and 13 when he was traveling with his wife in the Netherlands for the needs of the movie. Unfortunately they had a car accident and his wide died. At the spot of the accident there was a road sign that depicted the next Dutch city: Ommen, 66.6 km.

Satan’s baby, Superman & The Crow

“Rosemary’s Baby” (1968) was the creation of Roman Polanski. The movie is about a pregnant woman who believes she carries Satan’s baby. A year after the premiere of the film, actress Sharon Tate who was Polanski’s wife was murdered by Charles Manson’s fans while she was pregnant. Beatle’s John Lennon was murdered in New York in 1980 outside the building where the shooting of the Rosemary’s Baby was shot. George Reeves who embodied the role of Superman during the 1950’s committed suicide a few days before his wedding. Christopher Reeves who embodies Superman during the 1970’s and 1980’s was paralyzed from the neck down during a horse ride. In 2004, he died of a hematoma on the neck. In “The Crow” (1993) actor Brandon Lee (Bruce Lee’s brother) was shot by a real gun during the shooting of the film. No-one knows who shot the actor and how the gun had a real bullet.

Haunted alarm clocks, the irony of James Dean & the cursed Joker

A few weeks before the shootings of “The Amityville Horror”, the body of a fisherman was washed ashore in front of the house were the shootings would take place. During that same year, Jennifer Carpenter, the lead actress of “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” was walking up every night due to the sound of her alarm clock. The problem was that she had never set up her alarm clock to ring during the night! It is also noteworthy that the actor who impersonated Jesus in Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” in 2004 was hit by a thunder while they were shooting the scene of the cross! James Dean, died in a car accident during the premiere week of his movie “Rebel Without A Cause” (1955). The tragic irony is that a few days earlier, he filmed a spot asking the young drivers to be careful while they are on the road. Dr. Troy McHenry installed the engine of James Dean’s Porsche in his own car and one day after, he was also killed in a car accident. In 22nd of January 2008, Heath Ledger who impersonated “Joker” committed suicide. Some say that the “chaotic forces of Joker” led the actor to insanity. During the premiere week of “Batman: The Dark Knight”, Morgan Freeman was injured in a car accident and Christian Bale was arrested as he attacked to his mother and sister. Conway Wickliffe who was in charge of the acrobatics lost his life in a car accident as well. Despite the rumors that usually occur before or after a movie (mainly for commercial purposes) some of them are real and unusual and still remain an unexplained mystery. Are those incidents mere coincidences or is there a “force” that tries to warn the unsuspecting people for their ominous future?
